Understanding the Threat: Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles

Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles (CRB) are an invasive species causing significant damage to Hawaii’s coconut palms and other palm species. Native to Southeast Asia, these beetles have recently become a major threat to the islands’ natural beauty and ecosystem. CRBs bore into the crowns of palm trees, feeding on the sap and creating large holes. This activity weakens the trees, making them susceptible to other pests and diseases, and often leads to the trees’ death. The damage to palms not only affects the aesthetic appeal of Hawaii but also has economic implications, as coconut palms are vital to the local landscape and tourism industry.

The presence of CRBs can lead to a decline in coconut production, impacting local agriculture and the economy. Additionally, the loss of palm trees can disrupt the habitat for other native species, further disturbing the ecological balance. Immediate action is necessary to control and eliminate this invasive species to protect Hawaii’s unique environment and economy. Aloha Termite is dedicated to combating this threat with our expert extermination services, ensuring the health and longevity of your palm trees.

FAQ & Answers

Should I be worried if I find a Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle on my property?

If you have coconut, fan, date or other types of palm trees on your property, they may be at risk of severe damage that may lead to the death of the plant if infested with CRB.  Other plants that may be at risk of experiencing damage are taro, pineapple, banana, hala, sisal, and sugarcane.

How do I know if my plants have CRB infesting them?

Damage can be found on the inner, new fronds of palms in the shape of sharp “V” cuts across the leaflets or by a generally unhealthy appearance of the fronds.  There may also be bore holes visible in the crown of the palm or other parts of the plant.

Where did CRB come from?

Native to Asia, between India and Indonesia, Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles made their way across the Pacific, having devastating effects in Guam, Samoa, Fiji, and other South Pacific islands before being detected in Hawaii.  It is not completely clear how CRB made their way to Hawaii, but it is known that they can fly up to 2 miles a day, making their way around each island.  Both adults and larvae are accidentally transported through mulch and landscaping materials covering greater distances.

Is there anything that can be done to protect my plants?<br />

Yes!  Besides vigilantly inspecting all mulch, potting soils, and new landscaping for any beetles or larvae, and you can contact Aloha Termite & Pest Control to provide you with a treatment and monitoring program to protect your beloved plants from any future damage.

How much does it cost to remove Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle from my property?

We don’t know the price because we need to see the area infected. Please contact us so we can schedule a technician to see the infected area.
